SURGICAL TOOTH EXTRACTION

At the risk of high complications or if complications such as improper shape or positioning of the wisdom tooth is observed, an oral or maxillofacial surgery has to be done for the extraction or removal of the affected tooth. Sometimes all the wisdom teeth has to be removed or pulled out in cases of higher complications or in emergency dental extraction instances. In this case or otherwise, the surgery can be done in the surgeon’s office or in a hospital depending on the number of teeth to be removed or the complications attached to the removal of the tooth.

During the process of removing the wisdom tooth which is also known as the molar tooth, if any infection is being detected, the surgery would be delayed until the infection is gone. Antibiotics may be prescribed by the doctor or dentist to aid in healing up the infection.

A local anesthesia that would freeze the affected tooth region would be applied before extraction. In cases where the whole wisdom teeth is to be removed, a general anesthetic, may be applied. Pains to be felt by the body is prevented by the general anesthetic causing the patient to sleep while the surgery is being performed. The patient is always adviced by the doctor or dentist surgeon not to eat or drink after midnight before the surgery to prepare them for anesthesia.

The steps to a successful wisdom tooth extraction via the surgical method can be categorized into three. They are:

  • Making of tissue flap

  • Removing or trimming of the bone (ostectomy)

  • Sectioning of the tooth

As the name implies, surgical tooth extractions indicating that these processes may be complicated in its own way but can be broken down in the following fragments:

  • Making of gum tissue flap: This is the initial step in a surgical tooth extraction. In this stage, an outline incision is carried out on the gum tissue. The essence of this is to peel off the back of the tooth and provide the dentist direct access to the tooth. All other processes can thereafter be carried out after this stage.

  • Ostectomy: This is the second stage of the extraction. In this process, the bones supporting the tooth is removed or trimmex. This is usually done to create an opening in the tooth so the dentist can have a better access to the tooth easing the extraction process.

  • Sectioning of the tooth: This is the ultimate stage of the extraction process. In this stage, the affected tooth is being cut into pieces for easy removal. A relaxed state is needed by the dentist during this stage in order to prevent further damage of the tooth.

Surgical tooth extractions are needed in various situations. Either where there is a broken or fragile teeth or impacted teeth. It can also be administered in cases where there is an inelastic bone tissue around the tooth.

We must understand that a broken or fragile teeth or tooth occurs when the tooth above the gum is being fractured or damaged severely and can’t be repaired by simple tooth extraction. In this case, the tooth would have to be removed through an oral surgery which can only be done using a surgical tooth extractions method.

An impacted tooth may occur when a tooth or teeth isn’t in its normal position or state. In this case, the tooth or teeth can be in the mouth but can possibly be lying under the gum or bone tissue which can be one of the complicating issues we have in the world of densitry. Thus defect is prone to the wisdom or molar teeth.

An inelastic bone tissue occurs whtn there is an excess of the tooth grinding and wrinkling which may lead to the elasticity of the bone. In this case, the bone expands than it’s noal capacity. Also, the none density would increase under the effect of the clenching. This defect can only be corrected by surgical tooth extraction method.

After a successful operation, quick recovery is assured when all necessary precautions are put in place. Painkiller drugs are prescribed to the patient by the doctor or surgeon and some basic tips will also be given to them. A patient is adviced to adhere to the precautions and recovery tips to prevent experiences such as pains and swelling of the gums and tooth socket of the sure of extraction. Side effects of the surgery such as:

  • Difficulty in opening jaw

  • Slow healing gums

  • Damage to former dental crowns, bridges or tooth roots

  • Painful inflammation reffered to as dry socket (this occurs if the protective blood clot is lost in no time)

  • Numbness of the mouth and lips after the local anesthesic loses its activeness

  • An opening into the sinus cavity where the wisdom tooth was removed from the upper jaw may be inevitable if these precautions and tips are not adhered to.

However, dental surgery may initiate bacteria or infections in the body or blood streams of the patient if not carefully taken care of. Patients who finds it difficult to wade off infections are adviced to take antibiotics before and after the surgery. Patients with artificial heart values or heart defects mostly fall victim of this.
